(Kandal): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet expressed his gratitude to US President Donald Trump, China, and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for initiating the ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand, as well as for their close monitoring of the Cambodia–Thailand border situation with the highest attention.
The premier spoke on Monday (Oct. 20) during the inauguration for official launch of Techo International Airport in Kandal province.
Samdech Thipadei called on the Cambodian people to have confidence in the Royal Government, affirming that Cambodia will never abandon its right to negotiate on border issues. He also urged all politicians and citizens to refrain from debating who fell or prevailed, and instead to honour the sacrifices of the Cambodian heroes who defended the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to President Donald Trump for initiating and supporting the ceasefire, which could soon pave the way for a peace agreement in Malaysia if circumstances remain favourable. I also extend my appreciation to the Chinese leadership for their active role in facilitating the ceasefire, and especially to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for his valuable contribution,” Samdech Thipadei underscored.
According to Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, in his capacity as ASEAN Chair, played an active role in facilitating the ceasefire between Cambodian and Thai troops since 24 July, though it was only officially realised on 28 July 2025. He added that even after the ceasefire took effect, the Malaysian prime minister continued to closely monitor the evolving situation along the border to ensure it returned to normalcy.
The premier emphasised that as ASEAN Chair, Anwar Ibrahim helped mediate the intense post-ceasefire tensions following incidents such as Thai military encroachments in Prey Chan Village, Ou Beichoan Commune, Ou Chrov District, Banteay Meanchey Province. Samdech Thipadei also commended the efforts of the Malaysian Armed Forces Commander for taking timely measures to prevent further escalation along the heated border areas.
Premier Hun Manet also extended his appreciation to the ASEAN Interim Observation Team (IOT) for their support and participation in monitoring and preventing renewed armed clashes. He expressed hope that an ASEAN Observation Team (AOT) would soon be established to monitor, restore, and ensure lasting peace along the Cambodia–Thailand border.
The premier further expressed gratitude to leaders of various countries and the UN Secretary-General for encouraging both sides to reach a ceasefire quickly, as well as to national and international media outlets for accurately reporting the situation in Cambodia to the world.
