(Kandal): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said that Cambodia has adopted three key approaches to address border issues with Thailand, such as preventing conflict escalation, minimizing impacts, and restoring normalcy.

The premier spoke on Monday (Oct. 20) during the inauguration for official launch of Techo International Airport in Kandal province.

“Our approach consists of three key components. First, in any area experiencing clashes such as the recent incident in Banteay Meanchey involving 18 soldiers, we must prevent the conflict from spreading. Second, at the site of confrontation, we must act swiftly to minimize the impact. And third, we must work to restore stability in the affected area while simultaneously pursuing a complete end to the hostilities,” the premier underscored.

Samdech Thipadei explained that during the border clashes on July 24, the Royal Government’s foremost priority was to prevent the conflict from spreading to other border areas in neighbouring provinces. He noted that wherever clashes occur, efforts must focus on resolving the situation, minimizing risks and losses, and preventing further casualties. Under this strategic approach, Cambodia implemented decisive measures that led to the ceasefire agreement on July 28, successfully preventing renewed armed confrontations for more than three months.

Samdech Thipadei further explained that the process of restoring the situation involves finding ways to fully end the conflict through ongoing negotiations in frameworks such as the General Border Committee (GBC) and the Regional Border Committee (RBC).

Prime Minister Hun Manet also criticized certain foreign politicians for attempting to incite war without considering the plight of border residents, including children forced to flee their homes and miss school.

At the same time, Samdech Thipadei hoped that in the near future, the peace agreement will be signed between the prime ministers of both Cambodia and Thailand in Malaysia, during the upcoming ASEAN Summit, to end the conflict.
