(Kandal): Cambodia Prime Minister Hun Manet said that a peace agreement between Cambodia and Thailand will soon be signed. He underlined that resolving differences through peaceful means is the best solution for neighbouring countries, rather than resorting to military confrontation.
The premier spoke on Monday (Oct. 20) during the inauguration for official launch of Techo International Airport in Kandal province.
Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet noted that if leaders continue to meet anger with anger, wars will never end easily, and such actions risk bringing only destruction and the loss of innocent lives. He added that ongoing conflicts around the world clearly demonstrate how war has claimed the lives of countless soldiers and civilians alike.
“Therefore, in the near future, I hope that a peace agreement will be signed, and we will make every effort to end the conflict. This is our responsibility; this is what we must do,” the premier underscored.
On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei also addressed the public reactions on social media regarding the recent tensions along the Cambodia–Thailand border over the past two months. He urged the public to remain calm, assuring that the Royal Government is carefully and responsibly handling the border issue to restore normalcy as soon as possible.
The prime minister emphasized that border issues are inherently complex, noting that few ASEAN countries are entirely free from such disputes as many being colonial legacies that have persisted for centuries. However, ASEAN nations, including Cambodia, have chosen peaceful resolution through dialogue, bilateral mechanisms, and legal frameworks rather than military means.
He added that since 2000, Cambodia and Thailand have held multiple bilateral meetings and jointly installed 74 border markers. Both sides continue to approach demarcation with caution, and the Joint Border Commission is set to meet soon to accelerate the process.
“Cambodia has no intention to violate the sovereignty or territorial integrity of any nation, nor will we allow anyone to violate ours. This is our firm principle. We are resolving border matters in line with ASEAN principles, through existing border commissions, international law, treaties, and conventions that we have been following for the past 20 years,” Samdech Thipadei continued.
Samdech Thipadei concluded that resolving border issues peacefully will allow people living along the frontier to enjoy a sense of security and stability, without fear or displacement, as technical officials from both sides continue to meet and address concerns. This approach aims to prevent border conflicts, promote bilateral understanding, and ensure that no country loses its land. Cambodia continues to rely on legal and international mechanisms to find fair and lasting solutions to border issues.
