(Phnom Penh): The General Commissariat of the National Police of the Ministry of Interior would like to inform both the national and international public that several recent reports published by media outlets from the Republic of Korea and other foreign sources have presented misleading and inaccurate information.
These reports, which contain inaccurate and misleading information, have created confusion about the nature of the incidents and risk undermining the spirit of cooperation between the police authorities of both countries. Particularly concerning are references made to Yoo Jaesung, Acting Commissioner General of the Korean National Police Agency, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea, as cited in an article published by The Korea Times on 14 October 2025," according to the press release seen by Fresh News on Thursday (Oct. 16).
"Regarding the statements made by The Korea Times, which reported that “as of August 2025, approximately 80 South Korean nationals remain unaccounted in Cambodia,” and that “a total of 330 cases were filed through the South Korean Embassy in Cambodia. These include reports submitted by individuals and their families,” the Cambodian authorities would like to provide clarification. In reality, during the year 2025, Cambodian authorities received official requests for information from the South Korean Embassy concerning a total of 118 South Korean nationals reported missing, including three females. Among these, 40 individuals were confirmed to have already departed Cambodia, while 2 individuals had no recorded entry or exit data in Cambodia’s immigration system. As for the remaining 76 individuals, for whom there is no record of departure from Cambodia, thorough investigations are currently underway, and Cambodian authorities are taking all necessary measures to locate them with the utmost attention and diligence.
Separately, in 2025, Cambodian authorities received 52 requests for assistance concerning South Korean nationals, involving a total of 60 individuals (including 9 females), submitted through the South Korean Embassy, individuals themselves, and their families. As a result, the authorities successfully located 35 cases involving 40 individuals (including 4 females), while 3 cases involving 5 individuals remain unresolved. Relevant specialized authorities and agencies continue to conduct ongoing investigations regarding the remaining cases.
Furthermore, it should be noted that on 17 October 2025, the competent authorities planned to repatriate 59 South Korean nationals (including 4 females) who received assistance from Cambodian authorities or who had been detained for various offenses, back to their home country, under close cooperation with the South Korean Embassy in Cambodia."
