(Phnom Penh): Angkhana Neelapaijit, a member of the Thai Senate, has come under heavy criticism from some Thai citizens, who hold extremist views and lack human rights awareness, after she expressed opposition to the use of loud and disturbing sound broadcasts at night targeting Cambodian villagers in Prey Chan and Chouk Chey. Some Thais even labelled her a “Thai with a Khmer heart” and called for her resignation from the Senate.
Keo Remy, President of the Cambodian Human Rights Committee, stated that Angkhana Neelapaijit’s reaction should not be viewed as supporting Cambodia but rather as upholding Thailand’s reputation on the international stage, showing that Thailand still has intellectuals who understand responsibility, possess knowledge of national law, international conventions, and human rights principles.
He added that before Angkhana made her statement, many international friends in and outside Cambodia had commented that the Thai soldiers and Prime Minister lacked understanding of international law, comparing their awareness to that of naïve children. Some European observers even remarked that the current Thai Prime Minister, who did not come to power through the people’s will, has limited capacity.
Upon seeing the statement by the Thai senator and other intellectuals, Keo Remy said his personal view of Thailand had changed. He realized the country still has many knowledgeable individuals, though some are brave enough to speak while others remain silent, yet they do not agree with such disgraceful acts.
While defending the Thai senator, Keo Remy exercised caution, emphasizing the importance of distinguishing between extremist and non-extremist groups. He stressed that the radical actions of extremist factions do not represent Thai society as a whole.
He further noted that Angkhana Neelapaijit is clearly a Thai national and does not serve the interests of any other country. The hostile reactions from the Thai military and government supporters, he said, are akin to a fledgling bird that cannot yet comprehend the thoughts of an eagle.
Keo Remy added that his praise for the Thai senator stems from Cambodia’s desire to have good neighbours, people who share mutual understanding and work together to maintain peace, stability, and economic development for the betterment of communities along the Cambodia–Thailand border.
According to Keo Remy, losing Senator Angkhana Neelapaijit from the Thai Senate would mean losing one of Thailand’s rare and valuable human resources.
