(Phnom Penh): Speaking at the World Leaders’ Meeting in Beijing, China, on Tuesday (Oct. 14), Cambodia President of the National Assembly Khuon Sudary appealed to the international community to closely monitor the fragile ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand in order to restore peace and stability.

The event served as a global platform gathering legislative and executive leaders, along with partners from more than 100 countries across five continents.

Samdech Khuon Sudary urged the international community to closely follow the implementation of the fragile ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand with the aim of restoring peace and stability. She continued, saying: “Peace is a fundamental prerequisite for achieving our shared goals.”

It should be noted that, since Thailand’s aggressive incursions into Cambodian sovereignty from 24-28 July 2025, tens of thousands of Cambodian citizens along the border, including women and girls, especially pregnant women have been forced to flee to safe zones, abandoning their homes, schools, and workplaces.

In the refugee camps, there are elderly people, children, pregnant women, and postpartum mothers. Approximately 58 per cent of the children, particularly young girls, are living in fear of explosions, bombings, and forced displacement, especially suffering the loss of education.

To restore the current situation and uphold the genuine spirit of peace, Cambodia has continued to firmly adhere to the ceasefire that came into effect on 28 July, initiated by US President Donald Trump, coordinated by Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the current ASEAN Chair, and observed by several countries, including the People’s Republic of China.

However, despite the ceasefire, the Thai side has persistently violated the agreement, repeatedly escalating tensions through incidents such as border infiltration, the use of violence against Cambodian civilians, and the destruction of civilian property along the frontier.

Cambodia continues to maintain a stance of peace and patience, as it does not wish to see the people of either nation suffer further harm from war. The Kingdom has made efforts to resolve the issue peacefully through bilateral mechanisms, in full respect of the ASEAN Charter, the United Nations Charter, and international law, striving to return the border situation to normalcy.
