(Banteay Meanchey): Ongoing land encroachment in Banteay Meanchey province by Thai military forces has sparked deep fear among local residents, including young children.

Chouk Chey and Prey Chan villages, located in Ou Beichoan commune, Ou Chrov district of Banteay Meanchey province, are ancestral Khmer villages where hundreds of Cambodian families have lived for nearly 40 years. On August 12 and 13, Thai troops violated the ceasefire agreement of July 28 and the 2000 Memorandum of Understanding on border resolution by erecting barbed wire and using military vehicles to occupy local land and homes.

This encroachment has not ceased. Thai forces continue to advance, attempting to seize more land and property, even threatening to forcibly expel Cambodian citizens from their homes, actions that amount to serious violations of human rights.

The aggression has instilled widespread fear among villagers, particularly among the elderly, persons with disabilities, the sick, and especially children.

Children who once lived peaceful and happy lives now understand the meaning of war. Unlike children in areas untouched by conflict, their games have changed as they now play by building bunkers, mimicking shelters used during wartime to escape gunfire.

One group of young children said, "I’m afraid of war. I don’t want war. War means people shoot each other and people die."

Children who once only knew the fun have become fearful of war. Should the international community continue to stand by silently while Thai military forces violate Cambodian sovereignty and threaten to ignite armed conflict in these ancestral Khmer villages?
