(Phnom Penh): On Thursday morning (Oct. 9), Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet held a bilateral meeting with Roosevelt Skerrit, Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica, and his high-level delegation, at the Peace Palace on the occasion of their working visit to the Kingdom of Cambodia.
To begin, Samdech Thipadei extended a warm welcome to Roosevelt Skerrit and the delegation for their working visit to Cambodia. Samdech Thipadei viewed the working visit as an important opportunity to strengthen and expand bilateral relations and cooperation. He added that this year marks the 15th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
In response, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit expressed his profound gratitude to the Royal Government of Cambodia, the people of Cambodia, and Samdech Thipadei for the warm and cordial hospitality. He expressed admiration and high appreciation for Cambodia's development and progress, and conveyed his confidence that under the wise and visionary leadership of Samdech Thipadei, Cambodia will achieve even greater development and prosperity.
On the occasion, Roosevelt Skerrit also expressed satisfaction with the progress of the excellent bilateral relationship and was confident that cooperation would be further strengthened and deepened.
Both leaders highly valued the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the Establishment of Bilateral Consultations between the Foreign Ministries of the two countries today, which is intended to promote practical cooperation in potential sectors of mutual benefit for both nations. Both Heads of Government agreed and encouraged the relevant ministries and institutions of both countries to continue to strengthen and expand their relations and cooperation, especially through this consultation mechanism.
The two leaders also discussed and exchanged views on promoting cooperation in key sectors, including political-diplomatic affairs, economy, trade, agriculture, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges.
Taking the opportunity, Samdech Thipadei briefed Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit on the situation of the Cambodia-Thailand border and highlighted Cambodia's stance on resolving the border issue peacefully, based on existing bilateral agreements, conventions, treaties, and international law. Roosevelt Skerrit confirmed his clear understanding of the issue and expressed his support for a peaceful resolution of the border issue.
Following the fruitful discussion, the two leaders presided over the exchange of the "Memorandum of Understanding on the Establishment of Bilateral Consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the two countries." This mechanism will take place once every two years and will focus on the following topics: (1) Political, Diplomatic, Consular, and Security Affairs, (2) Economic, Trade, and Investment, and (3) Culture, Environment, Education, Training, Research, and Development.
