(Phnom Penh): The International Pencak Silat Federation (IPSF), in collaboration with Indonesia’s Ministry of Youth and Sports, has appointed an Indonesian senior coach to train Cambodian Pencak Silat athletes over the next three months.
To mark the occasion, the Embassy of Indonesia in Phnom Penh hosted a handover ceremony, led by Indonesian Ambassador to Cambodia Santo Darmosumarto, alongside Ou Dara, Secretary General of the Cambodia Pencak Silat Federation, and representatives from both federations.
The appointed coach, Lutfan Budi Santosa, is no stranger to Cambodia. In 2023, he helped prepare Cambodia’s team for their first appearance in a major Pencak Silat competition at the 32nd SEA Games in Phnom Penh, where Cambodia won its historic first gold medal in the sport.
Ambassador Santo emphasized that Pencak Silat not only boosts sports cooperation but also strengthens cultural and people-to-people ties between Indonesia and Cambodia. “Our countries share a deep historical connection. Today’s event reflects our shared commitment to greater understanding, respect, friendship, and practical cooperation,” he said.
Ou Dara expressed gratitude for Indonesia’s continued support, calling it “an act of friendship.” He noted that many Pencak Silat moves resemble those of Cambodia’s traditional martial art, Kun Bokator, and expressed confidence that Pencak Silat would continue to grow in popularity in Cambodia.
Coach Lutfan’s arrival comes at a crucial moment, as Cambodia prepares for the 3rd Asian Youth Games in Bahrain (October) and the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand (December). More than 90 Cambodian athletes are competing for spots on the national team for these events.
Originating in Indonesia, Pencak Silat was recognized by UNESCO in 2019 as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Through its promotion, Indonesia aims to strengthen both bilateral sporting cooperation and cultural connections. Cambodian Minister of Education, Youth, and Sports, Hangchuon Naron, highlighted this importance in recent talks with Ambassador Santo.
IPSF, founded in 1980 and currently led by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, continues to champion Pencak Silat globally. President Prabowo reiterated his commitment to supporting the sport’s growth during his meeting with Cambodian Senate President, Samdech Techo Hun Sen, in Jakarta in May 2025.
