(Phnom Penh): On the night of September 17, 2025, Lieutenant General Maly Socheata, Spokesperson for Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defence, condemned the violent actions of Thai joint forces in Prey Chan Village, Ou Beichoan Commune, Ou Chrov District, Banteay Meanchey Province.
According to the spokesperson, the incident began at 3:44 p.m. on September 17 when Thai armed forces, equipped with weapons, and anti-riot police, carrying batons, shields, and other gear, crossed into Cambodian territory and erected barbed wire fencing. Their intent was to encircle farmland long inhabited and cultivated by Cambodian citizens.
In response, local residents mobilized to dismantle the fencing and defend their land. Thai forces then escalated the situation, firing rubber bullets and tear gas at Cambodian civilians, and deploying devices that caused damage to the inner ear and nervous system. They also fired marble-sized slings and engaged in physical violence against civilians. As a result, at least 28 Cambodians, including civilians, unarmed forces, and Buddhist monks, were knocked unconscious or sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious.
Lieutenant General Socheata stressed that these actions represent a grave breach of the ceasefire agreement and a serious violation of the mutually recognized principles binding Cambodia and Thailand.
