(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen held a meeting with Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr., President of the Republic of the Philippines, on Monday (Sep. 8) at the Peace Palace.
According to Senate Spokesperson Chea Thyrith, at the outset of the meeting, Samdech Techo Hun Sen, on behalf of Cambodian King, extended greetings and well-wishes to President Marcos. Samdech personally expressed joy in welcoming him and considered the visit as a significant step in further advancing Cambodia–Philippines relations.
President Marcos conveyed gratitude for the king’s greetings and expressed delight at the warm welcome he received from the Cambodian people and government, which deeply moved him and his delegation.
During the meeting, Samdech Techo highlighted the need to expand bilateral relations, particularly in trade, noting that the current trade volume remains limited. He encouraged both governments to find ways to further boost economic cooperation. Samdech also underscored the importance of tourism exchanges, appreciating that President Marcos’ arrival marked the last use of Phnom Penh International Airport before its closure, and his departure would be through the newly inaugurated Techo International Airport, making him the first head of state to fly out from the new airport, a symbol of friendship between both nations.
President Marcos welcomed this recognition, agreeing that Cambodia’s new airport would contribute to strengthening tourism ties between the two countries and expressing hope that bilateral cooperation will expand through both trade and tourism.
Samdech Techo also briefed President Marcos on Cambodia’s border situation and thanked the Philippines for consistently supporting Cambodia–Thailand conflict resolution through peaceful means, particularly its support for maintaining the ceasefire.
In response, President Marcos affirmed that as an ASEAN member, the Philippines would make its utmost efforts to help ensure that Cambodia and Thailand resolve border issues peacefully and restore stability.
