(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen urged the US to continue monitoring Thai military barbed-wire installations along the border, describing them as a violation of the ceasefire agreement.
Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen received a courtesy call by Bridgette L.Walker, Chargé d'Affaires of the United States, on Friday (Sep. 5) at the Senate.
According to the Senate Spokesperson Chea Thyrith, Samdech Techo welcomed the Chargé d’Affaires and her colleagues, expressing his pleasure at the renewed engagement.
Bridgette L.Walker thanked Samdech Techo for allowing her and her delegation to pay a courtesy, noting the good momentum in Cambodia-US relations as both nations celebrate the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties.
Samdech Techo briefed her on the history of the Cambodia–Thailand border dispute and recent developments since the 28 July 2025 ceasefire. He stressed that the ceasefire would not have been possible without the involvement of US President Donald Trump.
The Senate president expressed deep gratitude to the US administration and Secretary of State for their timely measures, saying the US-brokered ceasefire prevented further loss of life among soldiers and civilians.
He voiced concern over Thailand’s ongoing barbed-wire installations along the border and requested continued US attention to ensure the ceasefire is upheld. He reaffirmed Cambodia’s position: to resolve the border issue peacefully and restore normalcy.
For her part, Bridgette L.Walker expressed appreciation for Samdach Techo Hun Sen’s clear explanation, reaffirming that the US, especially President Trump and the Secretary of State, remains highly attentive to Cambodia–Thailand border developments and desires to see peace restored.
She added that the US would encourage the formation of an ASEAN observer group, as agreed by both sides.
Samdech Techo also thanked the US for past humanitarian assistance to Cambodian refugees. The two also discussed Cambodian migrants in the US, with Bridgette L.Walker requesting facilitation for their repatriation. The Senate president confirmed the Cambodian government would accept returnees, emphasising that Cambodia has always upheld this stance, even during his tenure as prime minister.
