(Phnom Penh): Meas Sophorn, Spokesperson for Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, confirmed that during a bilateral meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, António Guterres, Secretary General of the United Nations, expressed his concern over the Cambodia–Thailand border dispute and acknowledged the joint request from both parties to implement the ceasefire and avoid the use of force in unsettled areas.

Meas Sophorn spoke shortly after midnight on Tuesday (Sep. 2) at a press conference held upon the return of Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet and the high-level Cambodian Government delegation from the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Plus Summit in Tianjin, China.

The UN secretary general highly valued Cambodia’s active participation as a member of the United Nations in many international activities.

With regard to the Cambodia–Thailand border issue, the secretary general stressed that he has been and will continue to closely monitor the situation. He also acknowledged the request from both sides to implement the ceasefire and refrain from resorting to military means in addressing unresolved border matters, especially in areas where civilian populations are living.

The spokesperson added that the UN secretary general encouraged both parties to resolve their disputes peacefully through existing mechanisms, particularly the Cambodia–Thailand Joint Border Committee (JBC), based on the Cambodia–Thailand agreements, relevant treaties and international law.
