(Phnom Penh): Chinese President Xi Jinping reaffirmed his support for the Cambodia–Thailand ceasefire, the ASEAN ceasefire monitoring mechanism, and the establishment of an ASEAN Observer Team (AOT) led by Malaysia, in its capacity as rotating ASEAN Chair.

President Xi made this statement during a meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, who led a high-level government delegation to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Plus Summit in China from 30 August to 1 September 2025.

Meas Sophorn, Spokesperson for the Prime Minister, spoke shortly after midnight on Tuesday (Sep. 2) at a press conference held upon the return of Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet from the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Plus Summit in Tianjin, China.

“China supports the ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand, backs ASEAN’s ceasefire monitoring mechanism, and supports the prompt establishment of the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT) led by Malaysia,” the spokesperson underscored.

Meas Sophorn further noted that President Xi warmly welcomed Prime Minister Hun Manet and the Cambodian delegation for making time to join the SCO Summit despite their busy schedule.

President Xi reaffirmed China’s support for Cambodia in building and strengthening self-reliant development capacity, as well as safeguarding its national sovereignty. At the same time, China pledged humanitarian aid worth 20 million yuan (approximately USD13 million) to Cambodia to help restore damage and ease the hardships of civilians affected by the armed clashes at the end of July.

Both sides also agreed to continue enhancing and deepening cooperation in priority areas including politics, diplomacy, economy, trade, infrastructure development, security, and defence.
