(Phnom Penh): Meas Sophorn, Spokesperson for Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, said that Chinese President Xi Jinping announced a humanitarian aid package of 20 million yuan to help restore damage and alleviate the hardship of Cambodian people affected by the armed clashes in the border conflict between Cambodian and Thai troops at the end of July 2025.
Meas Sophorn spoke shortly after midnight on Tuesday (Sep. 2) at a press conference held upon the return of Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet and the high-level Cambodian Government delegation from the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Plus Summit in Tianjin, China.
He added that, in front of Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet, President Xi Jinping affirmed that China supports Cambodia in building and strengthening its capacity for self-reliant development and in safeguarding its national sovereignty.
The spokesperson further quoted, “President Xi also announced the provision of humanitarian aid worth 20 million yuan to Cambodia, to help restore damage and ease the hardship of citizens affected by the armed clashes late last July.”
In addition, President Xi Jinping made clear that China supports the ceasefire between Cambodian and Thai troops, supports the ASEAN ceasefire monitoring mechanism, and supports the rapid establishment of the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT), led by Malaysia.
Furthermore, the Cambodian and Chinese leaders also agreed to continue strengthening and deepening cooperation in priority sectors, including politics, diplomacy, economy, trade, infrastructure development, security, and national defence.
It should be noted that due to the five-day fighting along the Cambodia–Thailand border, more than 50,000 families, equivalent to nearly 200,000 people, have become displaced. All displaced persons are currently residing in safe temporary shelters located in Banteay Meanchey, Preah Vihear, Oddar Meanchey, Siem Reap, and Pursat provinces. In total, 185 safe shelters have been arranged by the authorities. The majority of displaced persons are women, the elderly, children, persons with disabilities, and pregnant women.
