(Phnom Penh): The Senate unanimously endorsed the draft amendment to the Law on Nationality on Monday (Sep. 1), with all 54 senators voting in favour during an Extraordinary Session of the 5th Legislature chaired by Acting Senate President Ouch Borith.

The amendment revises provisions on the revocation of Khmer nationality for individuals residing both in Cambodia and abroad, in line with the newly amended Article 33 of the Constitution. It is intended to safeguard constitutional integrity, peace, sovereignty, and national security while preventing activities that threaten national interests and dignity.

The press release emphasized that the law strengthens Cambodia’s legal framework at a time of mounting external pressures and territorial encroachments, noting that a small group of nationals abroad have engaged with foreign actors in ways deemed harmful to national stability.

The draft law was first approved by the National Assembly on 25 August 2025, with 120 votes in favour. In the Senate, the report was presented by Neang Phat, Chair of the Committee on Interior, National Defence, Public Function, and Boundary Affairs. Five senators contributed opinions, and Minister of Interior Sar Sokha offered clarifications before the final vote.
