(Tianjin): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet requested China to call on Cambodia and Thailand to avoid the use of military force in resolving outstanding border issues, particularly in areas where civilians reside.

Samdech Thipadei held a bilateral meeting with Wang Huning, Chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, on Sunday (Aug. 31) in Tianjin, China.

The premier underlined that Wang Huning expressed delight over the growing cooperation between the two countries across all sectors.

Samdech Thipadei added that the meeting also touched on the border dispute between Cambodia and Thailand. China supported the ceasefire agreement between the Cambodian and Thai armed forces, as well as Malaysia’s role in mediating the ceasefire, and further encouraged the restoration of normal relations between Cambodia and Thailand in the near future.

The premier further mentioned that he asked China to encourage both Cambodia and Thailand to refrain from the use of military force in resolving unresolved border issues, especially in inhabited areas, and instead settle the issues peacefully through existing border mechanisms, namely the Cambodia–Thailand Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) based on the foundation of bilateral agreements, relevant treaties, and international law.

It should be noted that on 30 August, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet also paid a courtesy call and held a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. During that meeting, the Chinese President voiced support for the ceasefire agreement between Cambodian and Thai armed forces, as well as ASEAN’s ceasefire monitoring mechanism led by Malaysia, and further expressed the wish to establish an ASEAN Observer Team (AOT) promptly.
