(Phnom Penh): Chum Sounry, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, said that Cambodia welcomes the call from the diplomatic corps that inspected the Cambodia–Thailand border, urging both countries to fully implement the ceasefire.
The spokesperson spoke on Sunday (Aug. 24) during a press conference.
The Cambodia–Thailand armed clashes broke out on the morning of 24 July 2025 at the Ta Moan Thom temple area in Oddar Meanchey province and later spread to other points along the border. The fighting erupted after the Thai side opened fire first at the Ta Moan Thom temple.
Following the ceasefire meeting between Cambodia and Thailand in Malaysia on 28 July 2025, both sides agreed on an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, which officially entered into force at midnight on the same day. Since then, Cambodia has never violated the agreement.
Cambodian Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn led a field visit of 60 heads and representatives of diplomatic missions, along with specialized agencies of the United Nations (UN) and foreign NGOs working on mine action in Cambodia, to Banteay Meanchey and Oddar Meanchey provinces on 22–23 August 2025.
“Cambodia welcomes the diplomatic corps’ call to strictly uphold the ceasefire agreement between Cambodia and Thailand, as emphasized during their recent field visit to Oddar Meanchey province on 22 August 2025," the spokesperson underscored.
The spokesperson highlighted the remarks of Atsushi Ueno, Japanese Ambassador to Cambodia, who witnessed firsthand the impacts of the recent military aggression that forced local families to flee their homes. He reiterated Japan’s hope for a peaceful solution.
Ambassador Ueno underlined, “We want to see peaceful and calm lives restored as soon as possible, and we hope that this issue will be resolved through peaceful dialogue between the two countries, not through fighting.”
The diplomatic corps delegation expressed hope that full peace would soon be restored and stressed the importance of respecting and effectively implementing the ceasefire agreement to pave the way for a long-term peaceful resolution. This would enable displaced families to return home and resume their lives in safety and dignity.
