(Phnom Penh): The Royal Government of Cambodia, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, highly valued and expressed its deepest gratitude to U.S. President Donald Trump for his initiative in realising the Cambodia–Thailand ceasefire agreement, and also welcomed the US’s continued active engagement on this matter.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday (Aug. 20), Nong Sakal, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, stated, “Cambodia highly values U.S. President Donald Trump’s initiative to realise the ceasefire agreement, and also appreciates the United States’ active engagement in this regard.”

Furthermore, the Royal Government of Cambodia expressed its profound gratitude to the European Union for announcing emergency humanitarian funding of approximately 700,000 euros (approximately USD 816,000) to support the people most affected by the recent border clashes. This aid, Nong Sakal noted, will be implemented through the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

He also underlined that the EU is not only a development partner of Cambodia but also a strategic partner of ASEAN. Meanwhile, China, through its embassy in Cambodia, and Japan, through the Japanese Embassy in Phnom Penh, also extended assistance to help victims affected by the Cambodia–Thailand conflict.

At the same time, the Foreign Ministry spokesperson reaffirmed that Cambodia remains fully committed to faithfully implementing the ceasefire agreement reached between the two sides, firmly believing that the ceasefire serves as the strongest foundation for building long-lasting peace for all. He further noted that Cambodia has officially lodged a protest against actions by the Thai armed forces, which have laid barbed-wire fences, installed nets and tires in several areas along the Cambodian border.
