(Phnom Penh): Chum Sounry, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, affirmed that Cambodia welcomes China’s indispensable role in facilitating dialogue and promoting de-escalation of tensions between Cambodia and Thailand.

The spokesperson spoke on Saturday (Aug. 16) during a press conference.

“Cambodia welcomes China’s indispensable role in facilitating dialogue and promoting de-escalation. Cambodia expresses particular gratitude for China’s support of the ceasefire agreed upon by Cambodia and Thailand, as well as China’s strong commitment to restoring normal relations between the two neighboring countries through peaceful means,” the spokesperson underscored.

He added that Cambodia firmly upholds the ceasefire agreed upon by both sides during the extraordinary meeting on 28 July 2025, which was further reinforced at the special session of the Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) on 7 August 2025.

Cambodia also reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to resolving disputes peacefully in accordance with international law, the principles of the United Nations Charter, and the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC).

Furthermore, Cambodia stressed the urgent need to adopt the Terms of Reference for the establishment of the ASEAN Observer Team to enable the team to operate as soon as possible. This mechanism is vital to ensure the full and effective implementation of the ceasefire, in line with the decision of the 28 July 2025 extraordinary meeting.

The spokesperson further emphasized Cambodia’s appreciation to China for its willingness to support post-conflict reconstruction efforts between Cambodia and Thailand. This engagement reflects a shared commitment to building long-term peace and restoring communities affected by the recent armed conflict.
