(Phnom Penh): Pen Bona, Delegate Minister and Head of the Royal Government Spokesperson Unit, summarised Thailand’s repeated violations of Cambodia’s sovereignty. These alleged actions include laying nets, erecting barricades, and placing vehicle tires along sections of Cambodia’s border.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday (Aug. 15), Pen Bona also noted that the Cambodian Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) has called for strong protests and firm opposition to the Thai military’s incursions, which he said involve multiple incidents of border violations as follows:
1. On 12 August 2025, the Thai military installed barbed wires, nets, barriers, and tyres along the border segment between border posts No. 46-47, located within the geographical area of Chouk Chey village, Ou Beichoan commune, Ou Chrov district, Banteay Meanchey province.
2. On 13 August 2025, similar actions were taken along the border segment between border posts No. 42-43, situated in Prey Chan village, also in Ou Beichoan commune, Ou Chrov district, Banteay Meanchey province.
3. On 14 August 2025, the Thai military attempted to repeat these actions near the Beung Trakuon border crossing, within the area of Banteay Meanrut and Thnal Bambek villages, Kouk Romiet commune, Thma Puok district, Banteay Meanchey province. However, the attempt was abandoned after the presence of Cambodian civilians, security forces, and foreign military observers in the area was noticed.
The Thai military’s unilateral attempts to occupy land through the installation of barbed wires, barriers, and deployment of tyres along the said border segments constitute a violation of the spirit of the 2000 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and international law. Moreover, such actions infringe upon the authority of the Joint Border Committee (JBC) and undermine the outcomes of past negotiation efforts and the ongoing bilateral dialogue between the two countries.
