(Siem Reap): Shakeel Ahmad, Deputy Resident Representative of UNDP Cambodia, expressed deep sympathy and sorrow upon witnessing the suffering of civilians forced to flee their homes, scattered across fields in search of safety. He also praised the Royal Government of Cambodia and all relevant authorities for their tireless efforts in meeting the needs of the displaced population.
His remarks were made during a joint field visit on Thursday morning (Aug. 7) to the displacement site at Wat Banteay Srei in Banteay Srei Village, Dam Daek Commune, Soutr Nikom District, Siem Reap Province. The visit included representatives from 11 foreign embassies and 15 UN agencies.
He expressed hope and confidence that “peace will return soon, allowing citizens to safely return to their respective communities.”
As a United Nations agency, particularly through UNDP, he affirmed that assessments will be carried out to evaluate both the social and economic impacts on affected communities, and to explore feasible options for supporting recovery.
He further stated that UNDP is already contributing to humanitarian efforts, including mine clearance training and operations, in collaboration with partner countries and agencies, notably with support from Australia.
Shakeel Ahmad added that his greatest hope is for the ceasefire to be upheld consistently and for lasting peace to prevail, enabling displaced people to return home and resume a peaceful life.
