(Phnom Penh): Cambodia’s air freight volume from Thailand has significantly increased following the full closure of the Cambodia–Thailand land border, according to Sin Chansereyvutha, Secretary of State and Spokesperson for the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation.

From July 30 to August 5, 2025, more than 2,000 tonnes of cargo were transported by air from Bangkok to Cambodia, a Civil Aviation report revealed.

Despite the border shutdown, air routes between Phnom Penh–Bangkok and Siem Reap–Bangkok remain active. VietJet and Thai Airways continue regular operations, though Bangkok Airways has suspended one morning flight from August 7 to September 15 due to reduced passenger demand.

Chea Chandara, President of the Cambodian Logistics and Supply Chain Business Association, explained that land was previously the primary mode for cargo between the two neighbouring countries, with sea and air playing minor roles. Since the closure, shipments have shifted to sea and air, with air freight now mainly used for essential and high-value goods.

However, he noted a sharp decline in Thai product orders following Thailand’s incursion into Cambodia on July 24. As a result, some Cambodian businesses have turned to alternative markets, leading to a drop in overall air and sea cargo volume.

Data from the General Department of Customs and Excise shows Cambodia imported over USD 262 million worth of goods from Thailand in June 2025, a 4.5% decrease. Meanwhile, Cambodian exports to Thailand rose by 8.2% to more than USD 52 million.
