(Phnom Penh): Lieutenant General Maly Socheata, Spokesperson for Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defence, said that the recent three-day General Border Committee (GBC) Secretariat Meeting between Cambodia and Thailand showed many positive signs between the two sides.
The spokesperson spoke on Thursday (Aug. 7) during a press conference.
It is noted that the GBC Secretariat Meeting was held from 4-6 August 2025, while the Special Session of the Cambodia–Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) is scheduled for 7 August 2025.
“Over the course of the three-day meeting, the Cambodia–Thailand GBC Secretariat Working Groups have engaged in positive exchanges of many important points. Many Cambodian proposals were accepted and agreed upon by the Thai side. Similarly, Cambodia also agreed to some good points raised by Thailand,” Maly Socheata underscored.
It should be noted that on 4 August 2025, Minister of National Defence General Tea Seiha led a high-level delegation of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF) to participate in the Special Session of the Cambodia–Thailand General Border Committee (GBC).
The meeting was also observed by representatives from Malaysia, the United States, and China. It was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
This GBC meeting comes after both Cambodia and Thailand agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, which took effect at midnight on 28 July 2025.
The armed clash between Cambodia and Thailand broke out in the morning of 24 July 2025, at the area near Ta Moan Thom Temple in Oddar Meanchey province and spread to other areas along the Cambodia–Thailand border. The conflict was triggered when Thai forces opened fire first at the Ta Moan Temple area.
