(Phnom Penh): Lieutenant General Maly Socheata, Spokesperson for Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defence, firmly rejected Thai media reports claiming a Cambodian spy was arrested in Buriram province.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday (Aug. 6) on the current status of the Cambodia-Thailand ceasefire implementation, Lieutenant General Maly Socheata condemned the reports as baseless fabrications, lacking any credible evidence and aimed at distorting the truth. She criticized the claims as unprofessional and driven by ill intent toward Cambodia.
"The Thai media’s allegation that the arrested individual is a Cambodian soldier serving at the Bodyguard Headquarters is entirely false," she stated. "This fabricated report is baseless, unverified, and clearly intended to mislead the public and damage Cambodia’s reputation."
It should be noted that on Wednesday morning (Aug. 6), Thai media outlets reported that a Cambodian soldier had been detained in Buriram for allegedly spying and transmitting military intelligence back to Cambodia. In response, General Socheata stressed that the Ministry of National Defence and the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces prohibit the recruitment of individuals with tattoos, referring specifically to the suspect shown in Thai reports, further confirming that he could not be a member of Cambodia’s official military.
