(Phnom Penh): Chum Sounry, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, condemned Thailand’s recent legal threats against Cambodia as a diversion tactic designed to deflect attention from its own unprovoked aggression and ceasefire violations.
Speaking during a press conference on Wednesday (Aug. 6) on the current status of the Cambodia-Thailand ceasefire, Chum Sounry stated, “Thailand’s legal actions have no basis in international law. They are intended to distract both Thai citizens and the global public from Thailand’s hostile policies and its unlawful military attacks on Cambodian territory.”
He accused Thailand of violating international humanitarian law, breaching the July 28 ceasefire agreement, and endangering Cambodian civilians.
On August 5, Thai Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai announced plans to initiate legal proceedings against Cambodia over alleged military actions that supposedly resulted in casualties and property damage to Thai civilians, military personnel, and government agents. Thai authorities indicated they would file criminal and administrative complaints domestically and internationally.
Chum Sounry reaffirmed that Cambodia views these moves as nothing more than an effort to shift blame and avoid responsibility for Thailand’s clear violations.
