(Phnom Penh): Lieutenant General Maly Socheata, spokesperson for Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defence, confirmed today that the Secretariat of the General Border Committee (GBC) between Cambodia and Thailand is currently holding ongoing talks in Malaysia. The discussions aim to strengthen the implementation of the ceasefire agreement and build greater mutual trust and confidence between the two sides.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday (Aug. 5), Lieutenant General Socheata stated: “The Secretariat of the Cambodia–Thailand General Border Committee continues its meetings to explore concrete measures that will enhance the effectiveness and credibility of the ceasefire implementation, while reinforcing mutual trust with the Thai side.”

She added that the extraordinary meeting of the full Cambodia–Thailand GBC is scheduled to take place on 7 August 2025, in Malaysia. The Secretariat-level meetings began on August 4 and are set to conclude on August 6, serving as key groundwork ahead of the main session.

  1. This upcoming GBC meeting follows the ceasefire agreement jointly reached by Cambodia and Thailand, which came into effect at 00:00 on 29 July 2025. The truce was established to halt hostilities and prevent further escalation after armed clashes broke out on 24 July 2025, in the vicinity of Ta Moan Thom temple in Cambodia’s Oddar Meanchey province. The conflict, which reportedly began with an initial Thai attack, quickly spread to other flashpoints along the shared border.
