(Phnom Penh): Sun Chanthol, Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice Chairman of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC), said that the Royal Government is making further efforts to negotiate with the United States to reduce tariffs below the current 19 per cent for some priority goods, including garments, footwear, and travel bags that are not manufactured in the US.
“This 19 percent rate is a great achievement, but we’re not stopping here,” he said during a press conference on Friday (Aug. 1). “We will continue negotiations, especially for our priority sectors like garments, footwear, and travel bags, which don’t compete with US industries. They are made in Cambodia, so our goal is to secure even lower tariffs for these Cambodian-made goods.”
He added that this effort aligns with the government’s broader strategy to generate one million new jobs, especially for women, many of whom support four to five family members.
At the same time, Cambodia is working to cut production costs by reducing shipping fees, documentation charges, and other related expenses to boost national competitiveness and attract more foreign investment.
