(Phnom Penh): Lieutenant General Maly Socheata, Spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defence, confirmed that as of 3:30 p.m. on Thursday (Jul. 31), the 20 Cambodian soldiers detained by Thailand remain in Thai custody.

Speaking during a press conference on the current status of the Cambodia–Thailand ceasefire, the spokesperson made a renewed appeal for the immediate and safe return of the remaining personnel. she emphasized that the Royal Government is actively engaging in negotiations to ensure the swift and safe return of its forces, reaffirming Cambodia’s unwavering commitment to protecting its troops.

"Regarding our 20 soldiers currently under Thai custody, as of 3:33 p.m. this afternoon, they have not yet been returned to Cambodia. Therefore, we appeal to the Thai side to ensure their return as soon as possible, along with any other troops if there are any. We will negotiate to the fullest extent to bring our troops back swiftly and safely,” the spokesperson underscored.

According to the spokesperson, Cambodian armed forces remain firmly committed to building the Cambodia-Thailand border as one of peace, stability, cooperation, and development.

It should be noted that 21 Cambodian personnel were detained by Thai soldiers. So far, Cambodia has received one body back, while the remaining 20 are still in Thai custody.

The spokesperson also reassured the Cambodian public, stressing that the Ministry of National Defence and the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF) are committed to leaving no soldier behind.
