(Phnom Penh): Lieutenant General Maly Socheata, Spokesperson of the Ministry of National Defence, revealed that 168,946 people from five provinces have been displaced following Thailand’s military attacks on Cambodia.

Maly Socheata spoke on Wednesday (Jul. 30) during a press conference.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday (Jul. 30), she detailed the displacement figures recorded between 24 and 29 July: 38,447 from Oddar Meanchey, 29,717 from Preah Vihear, 34,264 from Banteay Meanchey, 3,026 from Pursat, and 33,492 from Siem Reap.

“Among the displaced are pregnant women, elderly people, persons with disabilities, and children, all forced to leave their homes for safe shelters or relatives’ houses,” Maly Socheata said.

Thailand’s aggression has also shuttered more than 600 schools across the five provinces, disrupting education for over 150,000 students and affecting 6,000 teachers.

She reported widespread destruction of villages, health centres, fuel stations, schools, markets, and even the UNESCO-listed Preah Vihear Temple due to Thai artillery shelling. Civilians, particularly women and children, have been placed at grave risk.

The attacks have caused severe humanitarian consequences, including shortages of food, clean water, and shelter. Families have lost their homes, livelihoods, and children’s access to education, she added.
