(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Delegate Minister Jean-François Tan confirmed that Malaysia, in its role as ASEAN Chair, is fully prepared to coordinate the establishment of a monitoring group to oversee and ensure the effective implementation of the Cambodia–Thailand ceasefire.

Delegate minister spoke on Monday (Jul. 28) during a press conference on the outcomes of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet’s participation in a special Cambodia–Thailand ceasefire meeting held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

“As the current Chair of ASEAN, Malaysia stands ready to coordinate an observer team to verify and ensure its implementation. Malaysia will also consult with fellow ASEAN Member States to participate in the observation effort, reflecting a regional commitment to supporting peace on the ground," delegate minister underscored.

He continued that the foreign ministers and defence ministers of Malaysia, Cambodia, and Thailand have been instructed to develop a detailed mechanism for the implementation, verification, and reporting of the ceasefire. This mechanism will serve as a foundation for sustained peace and accountability.

Jean-François Tan also declared that the war has ended, based on the historic negotiation results between Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet and Thai Acting prime minister today.

He added, “The sound of gunfire will cease from midnight tonight, as a result of the shared resolve of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s Acting Prime Minister to protect not only their nations but also the region and the international community.”

Honouring Cambodia’s armed forces and citizens, Jean-François Tan underlined that Prime Minister Hun Manet and the entire nation express profound gratitude to the Royal Armed Forces and to all citizens who have endured hardship over the past five days. “Peace has returned,” the Royal Government declared.

It should be noted that following their special meeting, both Cambodia and Thailand reached a common understanding, as follows:

1. An immediate and unconditional ceasefire, with effect from 24:00 hours (local time) on 28 July 2025. This is a vital first step towards de-escalation and the restoration of peace and security;

2. To convene informal meeting of regional commanders (Regional Military 1 and 2 on the Thai side and Regional Military 4 and 5 of the Cambodian side) at 07:00 hours on 29 July 2025, and followed by meeting with the Defence Attaches led by the Chair of ASEAN, if both sides agreed; and

3. To convene a meeting of the General Border Committee (GBC) on 4 August 2025, to be hosted by Cambodia.
