(Phnom Penh): Chum Sounry, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said that Cambodia strongly rejected baseless accusations from the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which alleged that Cambodia had attacked civilians and a hospital, and violated international humanitarian law. He stressed that the claims were a deliberate distortion of the truth by the Thai side.
Chum Sounry spoke on Sunday (Jul. 27) during a press conference.
"Regarding statement released by Thailand on 26 July, in which it announced plans to file complaints to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the International Criminal Court (ICC), accusing Cambodia of violating international humanitarian law by allegedly targeting civilians and hospitals. In connection with these allegations, I firmly and unequivocally reject the Thai Foreign Ministry’s groundless accusations,” Chum Sounry underscored.
He added that Thailand’s claims, alleging indiscriminate attacks by Cambodian forces on civilians and public sites were a deliberate and malicious misrepresentation of the reality on the ground.
Addressing the accusation that Cambodia deliberately targeted civilians, the spokesperson underlined that Cambodia has strictly adhered to the principle of distinction, in line with its obligations under the Geneva Conventions and international humanitarian law.
He also responded to Thailand’s misleading claims regarding landmines, reiterating that Cambodia remains a committed State Party to the Ottawa Treaty, actively cooperating with international demining institutions. Cambodia’s efforts have been recognised and praised by the international community.
