(Nice, France): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet reaffirmed the Kingdom’s strong commitment to becoming a party to the ‘Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction’ (BBNJ) Agreement, which was adopted on 19 June 2023.

The reaffirmation was made in his national statement at the Third United Nations Ocean Conference under the theme "Accelerating Action and Mobilizing Partnerships: Solutions for Ocean-Based Climate Action, Biodiversity, and Sustainable Development”, held in Nice, France.

Samdech Thipadei stated: “Cambodia reaffirms its strong commitment to become a party to the BBNJ Agreement adopted on 19 June 2023. Today, I am proud to announce Cambodia will take the next step in formalizing its commitment by signing this BBNJ Agreement.”

He added that Cambodia urged transparency in the sharing of monetary and non-monetary benefits in the process of implementing the BBNJ Agreement.

Addressing the forum, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet affirmed Cambodia’s readiness to engage in cooperative and protective action. He also called for bold, united, and resolute efforts for the ocean, for the people, and for future generations.

The Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement is a legally binding international treaty adopted in 2023 under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) to protect marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction.
