(Phnom Penh): In response to a protest held outside the Royal Embassy of Cambodia in Bangkok, Thailand, accusing Cambodia of involvement in a border dispute, Chum Sounry, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia, firmly rejected what he described as unfounded accusations that Cambodian border forces violated Thai sovereignty. He clarified that, in reality, it was Thai troops who initiated gunfire towards Cambodian military positions.
The spokesperson told Fresh News on Friday afternoon (Jun. 6).
“Regarding the protest in front of the Royal Embassy of Cambodia in Bangkok on the morning of Friday, 6 June, I reject the false accusations that Cambodian border troops encroached upon Thai sovereignty,” he underlined.
Chum Sounry went on to explain that the actual incident occurred at approximately 5:30 a.m. on 28 May 2025, when a military confrontation took place. Thai forces reportedly opened fire on a Cambodian military post located in Techo Morokot village, Morokot commune, Choam Khsan district, Preah Vihear province—an area long recognised as a Cambodian military outpost. The attack resulted in the death of a Cambodian soldier.
Chum Sounry stressed that this act constituted a violation of Cambodia’s sovereignty and a breach of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the two governments in June 2000, which is intended to maintain peace and stability along the border, particularly in disputed areas.
He underscored Cambodia’s steadfast commitment to respecting the sovereignty of neighbouring countries and to transforming the shared border into a zone of peace, friendship, cooperation, and development. He reaffirmed Cambodia’s firm resolve to settle disputes in accordance with international law and through peaceful means.
