(Phnom Penh): Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni lauded the wise, capable, and exemplary leadership of Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen and Prime Minister Hun Manet, for their continued efforts in protecting and sustainably managing the nation’s natural resources, efforts that have earned praise from the international community.
King Norodom Sihamoni presided over the Royal Ceremony commemorating National and World Environment Day on Thursday (Jun.5).
King Norodom Sihamoni underlined that Cambodia is a land of natural beauty and abundance, a precious heritage passed down from our ancestors that must be safeguarded for future generations. From majestic mountain ranges and verdant forests to the Mekong River, the resource-rich Tonle Sap Lake, unspoiled coastlines, and scenic islands, Cambodia’s natural wealth forms the lifeblood of the nation and is deeply woven into its identity. The balance between humans and nature, he noted, has long been a cornerstone of Khmer culture, traditions, and beliefs.
The king stated that living in harmony with nature, by respecting it, avoiding its destruction, and using its resources sustainably, is a sacred responsibility that must be upheld and strengthened for the sake of future generations. He has initiated the establishment of numerous protected natural areas as a lasting legacy and continues to encourage younger generations to actively participate in preserving the Kingdom’s natural heritage.
The king underscored, “Under the wise, capable, and outstanding leadership of Samdech Techo Hun Sen and Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet, Cambodia has continued to protect and sustainably develop its natural resources, an effort that has drawn recognition from the international community.”
Significantly, Cambodia has received international credit for its involvement in the globally recognised REDD+ program, which has enhanced the country’s ability to preserve its natural assets while preparing to mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change.
This year’s observance of National Environment Day, held in conjunction with World Environment Day on 5 June, reflects the government’s deep commitment to environmental protection. The king also expressed heartfelt joy and gratitude for the presence and contributions of venerable monks, national leaders, and Cambodian citizens from all backgrounds who have taken part in safeguarding the environment, conserving natural resources and biodiversity, and promoting sustainable development.
