(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen, also the First Honorary Vice President of the Cambodian National Council for Women (CNCW), proposed several new initiatives aimed at further promoting women’s roles in sub-national governance and economic empowerment.

Samdech Techo received a courtesy call by the delegation from Cambodian National Council for Women (CNCW) led by Ing Kantha Phavi on Wednesday (Jun. 4) at the CPP's headquarters.

According to Senate Spokesperson Chea Thyrith, Samdech Techo Hun Sen recommended that the CNCW proposed to the prime minister the establishment of a quota of at least two female deputy governors at the municipal, district, and capital–provincial levels—an increase from the current quota of just one.

In addition, the Senate president advised the CNCW to seek the views of the prime minister, particularly the Minister of Civil Service Hun Many to ensure a minimum of 50 per cent female representation in civil servant recruitment. According to Samdech Techo, this measure aims to enhance opportunities for women to serve in government and boost their participation in public administration.

Samdech Techo also underlined the importance of strengthening women’s leadership in the economic sector. He forecast that over the next 20 to 30 years, women’s influence in economic affairs would grow significantly, playing a vital role in both national development and family wellbeing.

During his tenure as prime minister, Samdech Techo Hun Sen consistently prioritised the promotion of women’s roles and capacity within society.

These latest recommendations represent a significant contribution to advancing gender equality in Cambodia. His proposals were warmly welcomed and deeply appreciated by the CNCW delegation.

Samdech Techo also revealed plans to meet with a group of leading female entrepreneurs to offer further guidance and encouragement, with the goal of increasing women’s participation in national economic leadership.
