(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen announced his intention to allocate approximately USD 10 million from his and his family’s personal funds to construct dormitory accommodations for female students pursuing their studies in Phnom Penh.
Samdech Techo Hun Sen received a courtesy call by the delegation from Cambodian National Council for Women (CNCW) led by Ing Kantha Phavi on Wednesday (Jun. 4) at the CPP's headquarters.
Samdech Techo recognised the challenges female students face when relocating to Phnom Penh, particularly the lack of affordable and secure accommodation.
Samdech Techo noted that while serving as prime minister, he frequently considered the need to build housing for teachers and students in the provinces. However, similar efforts had not yet been implemented in the capital.
Samdech Techo stated that the proposed dormitory will be built on a 2-hectare site and will be fully funded by his and his family's personal finances, not the national budget, as a legacy contribution for the benefit of female students.
Samdech Techo also announced on social media that the Bayon Television station site in Chroy Changvar would be transferred to the Ministry of Women’s Affairs for the purpose of constructing the dormitory.
The facility is expected to accommodate 500 female students, with four students per room. Each room will include a private bathroom and kitchen area, totalling 120 rooms.
Additionally, a health post will be established on the ground floor, including examination rooms and office space for on-site medical personnel.
Samdech Techo confirmed that upon completion, the dormitory will be officially handed over to the Ministry of Women’s Affairs, which will oversee its management and the selection of eligible female students lacking housing in Phnom Penh.
Samdech Techo Hun Sen expressed hope that the dormitory will help alleviate the difficulties faced by female students and play a role in promoting women’s empowerment, capacity building, and their broader participation in national development.
