(Phnom Penh): Viet Nam will construct a Cambodia–Viet Nam Friendship Monument at one of its national museums, in response to a proposal by Cambodian Senate President Samdech Techo Hun Sen. Samdech Techo expressed his appreciation for the initiative, describing it as a symbol of mutual gratitude between the two nations.
Samdech Techo received a courtesy call by Nguyen Tan Cuong, Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Defence and Chief of the General Staff of the Viet Nam People’s Army, on Wednesday (Jun 4) at the CPP's headquarters.
During the meeting, General Nguyen Tan Cuong informed Samdech Techo of Viet Nam’s plan to construct the Cambodia–Viet Nam Friendship Monument. He explained that the purpose of the monument is to enhance public and international awareness of the close and enduring relationship between Cambodia and Viet Nam, particularly in the military sphere, where the two countries cooperated in resisting colonialist regimes in the past.
For his part, Samdech Techo clarified that the monument was his original idea, proposed as early as 2020 before the outbreak of the COVID19 pandemic, with the intention of establishing a lasting symbol of friendship in Viet Nam.
The Senate president further emphasised that the presence of the Cambodia–Viet Nam Friendship Monument in Viet Nam reflects a spirit of mutual gratitude: Cambodia helped Viet Nam, and Viet Nam helped Cambodia.
Samdech Techo Hun Sen expressed his satisfaction with Viet Nam’s decision to build the monument at one of its national museums.
