(Tokyo): Cambodian Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn and Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa reaffirmed their commitment to upholding the spirit of the 2000 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the survey and demarcation of the Cambodia–Thailand land boundary.

Both sides also agreed to make full use of all existing mechanisms, particularly by expediting the convening of the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) to hold technical discussions as soon as possible in order to resolve border issues, especially in relation to the area where the recent incident occurred.

The meeting was held on Friday (May 30), on the sidelines of the Nikkei Forum 30th Future of Asia in Tokyo, Japan.

Both ministers noted that following the meeting between the army commanders of both countries on 29 May, the situation had returned to normal after the armed clash on 28 May. The clash reportedly began when Thai forces reportedly opened fire first at a site where Cambodian troops had long been stationed, resulting in the fatality.

Both ministers highlighted the prompt communication between Samdech Techo Hun Sen and Prime Minister Hun Manet with Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra. They reaffirmed their countries’ shared commitment to maintaining traditional friendly relations, good neighborliness, mutual understanding, and reciprocal trust in addressing all disputes through peaceful means, grounded in mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In line with its strong commitment to protecting its sovereignty and territorial integrity, Cambodia reiterated its firm stance on transforming the border area with Thailand into a zone of peace, friendship, cooperation, and development, for the mutual benefit of both nations and their peoples.
