(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen reaffirmed that what Cambodia truly seeks is a return to normalcy at the border, avoiding further escalation and ensuring that the situation does not harm broader cooperation between the two nations.

Samdech Techo spoke on Thursday (May 29) in a special statement addressing the recent armed clash between Cambodian and Thai forces at the Emerald Triangle border area, Preah Vihear province.

“What we want is simply for the situation to return to its original state—nothing more. Once that is achieved, the military on both sides can resume cooperation. According to Vong Pisen, General Srey Dek is expected to meet his Thai counterpart. General Srey Dek is the Commander of the 3rd Military Division and also Deputy Commander of the Royal Cambodian Army. Meetings between army and ground commanders are scheduled for this evening. I hope the armed forces will find a resolution and contain the situation strictly to the Emerald Triangle, restoring it to the status it held before 5:30 AM on 28 May,” Samdech Techo underscored.

Samdech Techo continued that he does not wish to see the incident escalate along the entire border or negatively affect other areas of bilateral cooperation, including economic, trade, investment, tourism, sports, and particularly military collaboration between Cambodia and Thailand.

At the same time, he called on the public and all Cambodians to refrain from aggravating the issue or inciting hatred through the use of inappropriate language. He urged for constructive approaches aimed at de-escalating tensions and rebuilding mutual trust for the benefit of both nations.

According to Samdech Techo, the Cambodia–Thailand trade volume exceeded USD 10 billion during the first four months of 2025, reflecting mutual economic benefits.
