Kampong Cham (FN), Dec. 21 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet considered cybercrime as a global issue and instructed authorities to prioritize efforts to combat it.
The premier spoke on Saturday (Dec. 21) at the inauguration ceremony declaring Kampong Cham Province as completing systematic land measurement and title deed distribution.
Samdech Thipadei warned, “Do not be misled online, especially with online lending. Let the National Bank and Ministry of Economy and Finance handle investigations and enforcement. This issue extends beyond Cambodia; even major nations struggle to regulate online technology.”
Samdech Thipadei underlined that with nearly everyone, young or old, owning a smartphone today, it is vital to stay vigilant and cautious about technology, noting its complexity and the multitude of systems involved.
Samdech Thipadei added that in the future, the Royal Government plans to connect the data systems of state institutions to streamline access to information.
It should be noted that technological fraud crimes are occurring almost daily, particularly at the local level, and when these crimes occur, citizens often face difficulty in filing complaints. To assist citizens, the National Police have established a working group to simplify the process of submitting complaints online.
Previously, General Sar Thet, the National Police Commissioner, stated that while technological fraud is not a traditional crime, it has led to citizens being deceived at the local level. As a result, the banking sector must cooperate with the National Police working group to prevent and combat these crimes.
Additionally, the National Police have set up a 24/7 Hotline Scam team to help victims of technology-based scams file online complaints efficiently. Citizens who are victims of such scams are encouraged to visit the website hotline.police.gov.kh or chat with the National Police's official page for assistance.
