Phnom Penh (FN), Nov. 1 – The Operation Team for Counter Trafficking of the General Commissariat of National Police would like to inform the public that on 29 October 2024, the General Commissariat of National Police received a request for intervention involving a young South Korean national, Choi Taewon, holding passport number M47223117, who was reportedly detained in Kandal province.
"Upon receiving this information, the Police Commissariat of Kandal Province conducted a search based on details provided by Choi's family and located him residing in a special economic zone in Sampeou Poun commune, Sampeou Poun city, Kandal province, with no signs of detention or mistreatment," according to the press release seen by Fresh News on Friday (Nov. 1).
"Choi Taewon had come to Cambodia seeking high-paying employment, with a job that provided adequate accommodation, sufficient food, and freedom of movement. The family’s intervention request stemmed from a lack of communication from Choi, leading them to believe he was in distress.
Based on the investigation, there are no indications of illegal detention or mistreatment, contrary to the family's report. Instead, Choi Taewon has not cooperated with authorities in providing details about his trip to Cambodia, his job search, or his failure to inform his family of his whereabouts, which ultimately led to a misunderstanding and misinformation that caused concern both domestically and internationally.
As a result, Choi Taewon will be sent to the General Department of Immigration for deportation procedures from Cambodia and will be barred from re-entering the country."
