Phnom Penh (FN), Oct. 31 – On 30 October 2024, the Singapore Embassy in Phnom Penh hosted a ceremony to congratulate recipients of the Academic Year 2025 ASEAN Scholarship Award and their parents. The award offers outstanding students from ASEAN countries, including Cambodia, the opportunity to pursue secondary and pre university education in Singapore.
The ASEAN Scholarship provides a comprehensive four-year educational journey, starting from Secondary 3 and culminating in the Singapore-Cambridge GCE A-Level certificate or its equivalent. Beyond academic excellence, the award will also foster critical thinking, leadership skills, and cross-cultural understanding, preparing the students to be global citizens and future leaders.
This year’s scholarship recipients are: Ear Ly Seang, Kuoch Each Phing, Phat Limpheng, Ea Socheata, Phaing Kimsang, Kim Lily, Chong Kimpor, Ung Su Yean, Sin Polin, Mon Chhorlanida, and Ly Kolyny.
Som Ratana, Under Secretary of State at the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, attended as the Guest-of-Honour. In his remarks, Som mentioned that over decades, Singapore has assisted Cambodia in human resource development, particularly by offering full scholarships to Cambodian high school students to pursue their education in Singapore. This year’s award ceremony is even more special as a record 11 Cambodian students have been awarded the scholarship.
Also present at the ceremony were three former ASEAN Scholarship recipients Ngov Kymeng, Huy Sokchea and Seng Keath of the ASEAN Scholarship cohort of 2000, 2002 and 2005 respectively. They have since carved out successful careers in their respective fields of construction, healthcare and childcare. Ngov encouraged the students to give their best in Singapore. Huy reminded the students that they must not be shy to seek help while Seng emphasized that it is important for the students to pursue their passion in school.
The ASEAN Scholarship is a testament to Singapore’s long-standing commitment to human resource development. It underscores the belief that investing in young talent is critical to shaping future generations of leaders.
