Colombo (FN), Oct. 18 – Uralchem Group is happy to announce that the maritime vessel – MV Asian Majesty – which has been anchored in the Bay of Riga with 55,000 tonnes of potash on board since early 2022, is now departing Latvian waters to commence its humanitarian voyage to Sri Lanka.

Despite the long-term storage in the ship’s holds, a series of independent inspections of the cargo confirm that the fertiliser remains in good condition and can contribute to improve vital crop farming and harvest yields for the people of Sri Lanka.

This consignment is Uralchem Group’s sixth donation in a series of humanitarian fertiliser deliveries to countries facing risks of food shortages and aims to alleviate the effects of an unprecedented global food crisis.

Since late 2022, Uralchem Group has dispatched, free of charge, around 190,000 tonnes of its fertilisers to developing nations and covered the sea freight and other delivery costs. The transport of more than 166,000 tonnes of these vital fertilisers from European ports — to Malawi, Kenya, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, and now Sri Lanka — has been facilitated by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP).

The humanitarian initiative also supports efforts to meet UN Sustainable Development Goal #2 — “End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture”.

Dmitry Konyaev, CEO of Uralchem JSC said “Potash is an essential nutrient for the growth and reproduction of plants, and its use in crop farming is vital for consistent yield gains. Unfortunately, Sri Lanka has recently suffered one of the worst economic crises in decades, which affected this island nation’s agricultural output and put vast swathes of the population at risk of food insecurity. As a major global producer of mineral fertilisers and a company with an unwavering belief that access to food is a basic human right, we are proud to contribute to the stability of Sri Lanka’s farming sector and the wellbeing of its people.”

Uralchem JSC (a part of the Uralchem Group) is one of the world’s largest producers and exporters of nitrogen and compound fertilisers. The Company’s production assets are located in Russia’s Kaliningrad Region, Kirov Region, Moscow Region and Perm Region.

Uralchem Group is a leading global producer of mineral fertilisers and chemical products. Its key assets include three major Russian companies — Uralchem JSC, Uralkali PJSC, and TOAZ JSC — with a cumulative production capacity of about 25 million tonnes. The number of people employed by the Uralchem Group is approximately 38,000.
