Phnom Penh (FN), Oct. 15 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet announced that, to date, Cambodia has deployed nearly 10,000 blue berets on humanitarian missions under United Nations peace mission, participating in 12 missions across 10 countries. Currently, there are 627 Blue Hat troops stationed in various conflict zones, with 130 serving in four countries.
The premier spoke on Tuesday (Oct. 15) during the 30th founding anniversary of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces’ (RCAF) Brigade 70 in Phnom Penh.
Taking this occasion, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet expressed his gratitude and appreciation for the Cambodian blue berets from all military units, recognizing their sacrifices in maintaining peace under the UN's banner in war-torn nations. The premier emphasized that the Cambodian Army has not only contributed to peacekeeping but has also played a significant role in promoting national development and assisting communities during times of disaster. Additionally, their efforts have enhanced Cambodia's international prestige through their participation in humanitarian missions abroad.
Samdech Thipadei noted that during his meetings with foreign leaders, they often commend the sacrifices made by the Cambodian blue berets in contributing to peace in crisis situations. Reflecting on Cambodia’s history, the premier pointed out that 30 years ago, Cambodia welcomed UN blue berets to help restore peace, and within a short time, it has evolved into a nation that sends its own Blue Hat troops to carry out humanitarian missions in conflict-affected countries.
"Since 2005, we have deployed nearly 10,000 troops across 10 countries, and currently, we have 627 personnel, including 130 women, serving in four countries," the premier underscored.
Regarding the deployment of troops abroad, Premier Hun Manet mentioned that he has reshuffled the leadership of the Task Force, transferring oversight from the minister of Foreign Affairs to the minister of National Defence. Instead, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will appoint a secretary of state to serve as the deputy chief for facilitation.
Samdech Thipadei also instructed Minister Tea Seiha to continually monitor the situation of the Cambodian blue berets in Lebanon, particularly concerning the need for troop evacuations to ensure the safety of Cambodian personnel abroad. He added that, if necessary, documents and materials must be destroyed. In 2023, he ordered the destruction of documents and materials in Mali following the UN's announcement of the complete withdrawal of blue berets from that country.
Furthermore, Prime Minister Hun Manet affirmed that ensuring the safety of people in war zones is paramount, and the Royal Government of Cambodia is committed to caring for its citizens everywhere, urging parents and guardians to remain calm.
Over the past 18 years, Cambodia has deployed a total of 9,465 troops, including 801 women, to 12 missions in 10 countries, including the Republic of Sudan, South Sudan, Chad, Lebanon, Cyprus, Syria, Central African Republic, Yemen, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Currently, Cambodian forces are engaged in 640 missions, with 119 women serving in five countries: South Sudan, Lebanon, Mali, Central African Republic, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
