Phnom Penh (FN), Oct. 15 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet confirmed that over 200 troops have applied to participate in the Traditional Khmer Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Championships, also called the “Samdech Thipadei Cup", which will be held from 18-20 October 2024 at the Phnom Penh's National Olympic Stadium, with more than 400 participants expected.

The premier spoke on Tuesday (Oct. 15) during the 30th founding anniversary of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces’ (RCAF) Brigade 70 in Phnom Penh.

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet stated that practicing martial arts contributes to the preservation and promotion of ancestral traditions, including Bokator and other forms of Khmer martial arts. He underlined that the RCAF has integrated three martial arts—Bokator, traditional Khmer mixed martial arts, and others—to prepare for training.

Premier Hun Manet added that the compilation of martial arts within the RCAF serves both tactical purposes and health benefits, providing the next generation of Cambodian soldiers the opportunity to engage in preserving and promoting the martial arts created by their ancestors during previous wars.

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet also called on the Military School and military units to further promote this training across the armed forces. He noted that the Royal Gendarmerie also practice these martial arts. This initiative not only aims to strengthen capabilities but also contributes to the preservation and development of the legacies left by our ancestors.

The Traditional Khmer Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Championships, held on 18-20 October 2024, will be divided into three categories including professional, amateur, and performance, encompassing a total of 12 disciplines at the National Olympic Stadium.
