Phnom Penh (FN), Oct. 15 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet announced a principle aimed at increasing attention to retired soldiers. Skilled and capable soldiers will be retained to train and mentor their successors, while those who are retired but still physically fit will have their retirement temporarily postponed.

The premier spoke on Tuesday (Oct. 15) during the 30th founding anniversary of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces’ (RCAF) Brigade 70 in Phnom Penh.

Taking this occasion, Samdech Thipadei noted that the number of retired soldiers in the army exceeds the new recruits. Therefore, the premier stressed the importance of paying attention to officers, deputies, and Type 2 soldiers who have lost their working capacity.

The premier added that soldiers with essential skills, who are still healthy, should be retained to train successors in areas such as tank operations, artillery, engineering, and others. In particular, soldiers who have reached retirement age but remain fit should have their retirement postponed.

"Younger officers, lieutenants, and capable soldiers who remain strong and committed should be allowed to continue their service, as they have spent years adapting to military life," the premier added.

On the occasion, Premier Hun Manet also proposed that the military, along with relevant services and legislative bodies, review the statutes of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces, particularly in relation to retirement conditions. He suggested considering raising the retirement age for lower-ranking soldiers and allowing them to receive some financial benefits for their future.
