Phnom Penh (FN), Oct. 14 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet stated that 2004 was a pivotal year for Cambodia, as the small and least developed country, to become a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO), speaking on Monday (Oct. 14) during the 20th anniversary celebration of Cambodia’s accession to WTO at Sokha Phnom Penh Hotel.
Samdech Thipadei expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Commerce for organizing this significant event, which reflects the vision and sound decisions of Cambodia's leaders and highlights the country's achievements. He noted that it marks a historic milestone in Cambodia's efforts to integrate its economy into a multilateral trading system centred on the WTO.
"By becoming a full member of the WTO, Cambodia's reputation has grown, inspiring other developing countries to learn from our experience,” the premier added.
On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei underscored that this achievement was not coincidental but stemmed from a clear policy and long-term vision. He recalled that Cambodia's journey to WTO membership began in 1994 and took over a decade to complete. He noted that 20 years after joining the WTO, Cambodia has successfully transformed from economic and diplomatic isolation by engaging in bilateral and regional mechanisms, resulting in continuous development.
