Phnom Penh (FN), Oct. 11 – Cambodian Delegate Minister Jean François Tan said that the Myanmar crisis remains a key issue at the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits and Related Summits in Vientiane, drawing some of the most intense discussions among ASEAN leaders.

The delegate minister spoke on Friday (Oct. 11) at a press conference regarding the outcomes of Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet’s participation in the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits and Related Summits held in Vientiane, Laos.

"This year, just like last year, the Myanmar crisis remains a central topic of discussion among ASEAN leaders. ASEAN, as a whole, continues to work tirelessly to help Myanmar return to normalcy, stability, and peace," delegate minister underscored.

Minister Jean François Tan further explained that since 2021, the Myanmar crisis has been a recurring topic at every ASEAN Summit. As Myanmar is a member of ASEAN, the prolonged instability within one of its member states is a matter of great concern for the entire organization. In this regard, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet highlighted in his speech in Vientiane that ASEAN must assist Myanmar in its efforts to restore normalcy as soon as possible.

Regarding the Myanmar crisis, the delegate minister noted that Samdech Thipadei, along with other ASEAN leaders, reiterated the importance of adhering to the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus, which was adopted during the special summit on April 24, 2021.

The Five-Point Consensus include (1) Immediate cessation of violence in Myanmar and all parties to exercise utmost restraint; (2) Constructive dialogue among all parties concerned shall commence to seek a peaceful solution in the interests of the people; (3) The special envoy of ASEAN chair to facilitate mediation of the dialogue process, with the assistance of the ASEAN Secretary-General; (4) ASEAN to provide humanitarian assistance through the AHA centre; (5) Special envoy and delegation to visit Myanmar to meet all parties concerned.
