Phnom Penh (FN), Sep. 24 – Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni was very pleased to participate in the inauguration of the Constitution Monument, speaking on Tuesday (Sep 24).
The king underscored, "In 2023, Cambodia celebrates the historic 30th anniversary of the promulgation of the Constitution, and today marks the 31st anniversary of the nation's inauguration of the Constitution Monument, a testament to the Cambodian people's commitment to respecting, protecting, promoting, and abiding by the Constitution as the highest law of our nation."
Given that the 1993 Constitution has remained stable for over three decades—a significant period in the history of constitutional law—and now that Cambodia enjoys peace, stability, and development, the Constitution remains strong. The king underlined that it is fitting for Cambodia to have a Constitutional Monument, which will remind the Cambodian people, both present and future, of the contributions of the elites who founded and upheld this supreme law. He called upon all to respect the ethics and laws of Cambodia.
King Norodom Sihamoni paid tribute to the souls of those dignitaries who contributed to the drafting of the Constitution in 1993 but have since passed away.
He also extended his heartfelt gratitude to Samdech Techo Hun Sen, President of the Senate, and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet for their support in completing this monument.
Additionally, the king commended and expressed deep appreciation to the President of the Constitutional Council, Im Chhun Lim, for initiating, developing the concept, and overseeing the construction of this sacred Constitutional Monument on the site of a National Heritage landmark.
This great accomplishment reflects the pride of the present, linking it to the glorious past of the Khmer nation, renowned for its noble civilisation and high prestige since ancient times.
On the occasion, King Sihamoni also praised architects, intellectuals, artists, and craftsmen from all walks of life who contributed to this monumental achievement.
Please be informed that on 16 June 2022, Samdech Techo Hun Sen agreed on the blueprint and authorised the construction of the Constitution Monument with a total national budget of more than USD2 million.
Groundbreaking on 12 June 2023, the Constitution Monument has a total height of 23.4 metres from the sand to the top of the three pillars and a total weight of 112.99 tons, was built on an area of 2380 square meters, facing east.
